Once upon a time, a lady did not leave the house without her hat. My granny, raised in the 20s, always had a penchant for the cloche, which she carried through until the 1970s.

My mom, always being fashionable, wore them from the 50s, all the way to the 90s.

Sources of their hats ran from Sears Roebuck in Indianapolis to Bloomberg's in Dothan, Alabama, and Lazarus Department Store in Montgomery, Alabama, to Kirven's in Columbus, Georgia, The Hat Bar in Augusta, and to the venerable Miz Mattie Dean in Ozark, Alabama.

Around the time I turned 14 (1982!), mom and I started a tradition of buying Easter Hats together. Having just moved to Florida, we found this wonderful old hat store, "Bernice's" in old downtown Lakeland.

For the next several years we planned our whole Easter garb around a trip to Bernice's, enjoying the romance of hats.

This page is a result of a recent rummage through the closet and realization of the treasures we had on hand. Rather than keep them hidden, we'd love to share them with someone who will wear and enjoy these timeless classics.

We've used different wigs to show how a modern woman might wear them, although the classic pixie cut goes with all.
